Hemp & Terpenes: What they do and why they’re popular
Hemp is an extremely versatile plant that has been cultivated around the world for thousands of years. More recently, hemp has become incredibly popular because of its many benefits:
—hemp oil has been found to promote a sense of wellbeing without intoxication
—hemp oil is non-addictive
—hemp seeds are high in protein
—hemp fiber is naturally antimicrobial and extremely durable
—hemp grows quickly and doesn’t demand a lot of water, making it more environmentally-friendly
While there are many benefits of hemp, in this article we’ll highlight how hemp oil may promote a greater sense of ease in the mind and body.
Hemp oil comes from the cannabis sativa plant which contains many different components including cannabinoids and terpenes. Unusual sounding terms but they are components that our human physiology responds to really well.
Let’s start with terpenes. Terpenes are the aromatic oils found in thousands of plants and these aromas (pine, lavender, and sage, for example) have been found to promote a sense of calm and well-being in humans. Think of how you feel after taking in a deep breath of a pine-scented forest or a bundle of fresh herbs; it’s rejuvenating and calming, isn’t it?
The benefits of terpenes go even further. Studies have shown that when terpenes are combined with cannabinoids the effects of these components are enhanced, referred to as the entourage effect.
What are cannabinoids? Cannabinoids are compounds in the cannabis sativa plant. Some cannabinoids can cause intoxication, however some cannabinoids promote a sense of calm and comfort without a sense of being “high”. The hemp plant contains the non-intoxicating cannabinoids.
Cannabinoids on their own—and terpenes on their own—can provide a sense of well-being. However when terpenes are combined with cannabinoids, the benefits are enhanced, allowing for a greater sense of calm and equanimity. This is why hemp and terpenes are increasingly popular today.
