What is the entourage effect?

With the increasing availability of CBD products, more people are starting to realize the wonderful benefits of CBD, CBN, and CBG. But there’s a lesser-known phenomenon known as the entourage effect that is equally important in how well these compounds act on the nervous system.

Discovered in 1998 by medical researchers, the entourage effect is the synergistic relationship between cannabinoids and terpenes. Research indicated that the therapeutic properties of CBD (or CBD, CBG, or a host of other compounds) were boosted by THC, terpenes, and other compounds.

Meet the Endocannabinoid System (ECS)

The mechanism by which cannabinoids affect the human body is via the endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS is a complex cell-signaling system that influences many different processes and bodily functions including sleep, mood, appetite, memory, and even immunity. Everyone has an endocannabinoid system even if they don’t use cannabis.

Components of the cannabis plant known as phytocannabinoids mimic chemicals in the human body and bind to receptors in the ECS.

Although CBD is the most common non-psychoactive compound in cannabis, CBG (cannabigerol) is beginning to move toward center stage in the ongoing research and development of CBD products.

CBG shares many similarities with CBD in how they both act on the endocannabinoid system. Both CBG and CBD are non-psychoactive meaning they won’t alter your state of mind the way THC does in higher doses. Alone, they are important compounds that act on the ECS, but together, they can be even more powerful.

The cannabinoid-terpene entourage effect

Terpenoids—the aromatic essential oil compounds of cannabis and other plants—can influence our mood and sense of wellbeing all on their own. Likewise, when taking pure CBD oil, one might experience a certain effect—feeling more at ease, a little less stress, more relaxed.

But when blended with the active cannabis compounds such as THC or with CBD, terpenes can dramatically influence the way the compounds interact with the ECS. While ingesting a certain cannabinoid compound or isolate may affect the nervous system or bodily processes, researchers found that by blending more than one compound, the effects could be amplified or used to target specific receptors in the ECS.

The whole idea of an entourage is to combine ingredients that are going to enhance the therapeutic effect desired. Generally speaking, 5 milligrams of CBD isn’t going to do a lot on its own. It’s more likely to have a benefit when the CBD has friends along for the ride. Those friends are terpenes.”
